The emotionally charged single 'Double Denim' by Viices drops today

Viices

With support from Creative NZ, Viices, the solo project, brain-child and passion of Jake McComb, will be dropping his new single “Double Denim” on all streaming platforms on November 16th. The emotionally charged single will also be available on vinyl, paired with the yet to be released B-side track “Jess Song”.

After writing as Viices for a few years, Double Denim has come to be the sonic signifier of a change in McComb’s artistic direction. The song, composed of nostalgic lyrical narratives and grungey guitar hooks, pays homage to the distinct Dunedin sound McComb interacted with when studying music at Otago University and the memory of a friend he met working in Dunner’s who has since passed.

The song is also a credit to Viices musical influences combining rhythmic motifs of classic NZ rock, as a long time fan of the likes of Shihad and Villainy, and softer, more melancholic vocals inspired by artists such as Carla Geneve and Fences. Though his earliest and most prominent influence came from day dot, drawing inspiration from his Mum, Taranaki based musician, Juliet McLean.

With this release, Viices is embarking on a new chapter in his artistic journey and could not be more pumped to share his noise making with all who will listen.

Now recording their 7th studio album for a 2020 release, Shapeshifter continue to innovate while solidifying their status as New Zealand’s premiere live electronic outfit. The five-strong live line-up of PDigsss (vocals), Sam Trevethick (guitar/synths/sampler), Dan McGruer (synths/sampler), Nick Robinson (bass/synths/MPC) and Darren Mathiassen (drums) have created their very own heavy soul; a stadium-sized sound which adds layers of drum & bass, jazz, funk, rock and electronica to solid bass culture foundations.

The eagerly anticipated first taste is the single ‘Break Me Down’, combining the intensity of modern drum and bass with mature song writing and inspirational vocals – a combination the bands legion of fans know well. Written on tour in the London studio of Brad “Baloo” Ellis (Nextmen, Wilkinson, Little Mix, Plan B), the tune has already been a highlight of live performances at New Zealand’s biggest festivals including Homegrown and Bay Dreams.

On top of their upcoming summer New Zealand tour dates, Shapeshifter have just been announced as one of the 2020 Homegrown headliners. We’re stoked to be bringing them to Hawkes Bay on Friday 20 December so make sure you’ve got your tickets.
