Mazbou Q shines on the release of his powerful new EP, AFROTERNITY

Nigerian-Kiwi hip-hop artist, rapper and producer Mazbou Q has released his highly-anticipated debut EP, AFROTERNITY, which includes the new single ‘Bad Energy’.

Mazbou Q describes ‘Bad Energy’, which features Oklahoma rapper and producer Kevin Posey, as one of the more sonically darker tracks in his discography. But in keeping with the Auckland-based artist’s modus operandi, the message is as powerful and as positive as ever. “The main theme is to not let negativity into our lives and focusing on the positive in any given situation”, says Mazbou Q.

“Ironically, it plays on mainstream hip-hop’s historical tendency toward violent themes by which its usage of violent imagery against an abstract embodiment of ‘bad energy’. The idea is that if we figuratively kill the negativity in our lives, we will be better off for it,” he adds.

The man behind the Mazbou Q moniker – Hugh Ozumba – is no stranger to Aotearoa’s music scene. After carving out a name for himself as Unchained XL, he made the bold move earlier this year of revealing a new stage name and new music. “When I chose the name Unchained XL, it represented whom I was at the time. However, a small but growing part of me was never able to fully embrace it and I have struggled to sit in that discomfort. My response was to retrospectively pack extra layers of meaning into the name, hoping it would resonate more fully with whom I was becoming as an artist. Nevertheless, the more ‘me’ I became through my art, the less ‘me’ the name felt. It was for this reason, as I entered a new year, decade and season of life, I chose my new artist name Mazbou Q - encoded from my birth name,” he explains.

The EP’s first single, ‘To The Gates’, accompanied by a powerful and exquisitely shot video (watch HERE) premiered on NZ’s top hip-hop and R&B station Mai FM and was added to bFM. It was followed by the second single ‘Blacklight’ feat. Mo Muse and Phodiso. Combined both tracks and their videos have received tens of thousands of streams across multiple platforms.

It laid down the foundations for the release of AFROTERNITY, which officially marks a new chapter in the journey of one New Zealand’s most unique artists.

“My music remains unapologetic in its political message - one of anti-racism and black consciousness. On previous records it hasn’t left much space for confidence in self, perhaps as a subconscious concession to New Zealand’s tall poppy syndrome. In AFROTERNITY, I evolve past that - I’m not afraid to shine on this EP.”

ARIA shares visuals for debut single 'Awake With You'

Solo artist ARIA released her debut single ‘Awake With You’ earlier this month and she’s just released the anticipated music video today. Produced by acclaimed actress Morgana O’Reilly, the raw visuals explore the longing and turmoil that comes when a love affair is over.

Her debut single ‘Awake With You’ is a high energy, pop-soul collaboration with renowned electronic producer and NZ Music Awards nominee, Boycrush, whose illustrious drumming career (Lawrence Arabia, Ruby Suns) is evidenced by the driving drums in the tune. The new single’s industrial-electronic feel, reminiscent of Robyn’s synth-pop sound, is counterbalanced with tender vocals and vivid lyrics circling love, loss and desire. ARIA’s voice has an ethereal yet focused quality, putting it in the sonic realm of Solange.

ARIA fostered her talent for singing, dancing and performing from a young age and into her womanhood via the Auckland Uni Music School and the New Zealand Opera Chorus. A driven and unique artist, she has worked with Homebrew, Dr Colossus, provided backup vocals for Teeks as well as Noah Slee at Berlin Red Bull studios.

After spending three years in Berlin, soaking up the dance-floor dysphoria, ARIA is excited to be home and channeling the eclectic, artistic influences she has gathered into a personal and vulnerable body of work.

‘Awake With You’ is available on all streaming platforms.

To accompany the release of this single/album, bKIDD has created the brand KRO which will be incorproated into packaging and merch:

SAM V ‘Ain’t Slowin’ Down (remix)

New from the 1010’s very own isolated SAM V, ‘Ain’t Slowin’ Down (remix)’ is a fresh Urban/R&B track produced in collaboration with Lion Rezz, Juwan and EDY. With a distinctive, retro B2K-esque 2000’s energy, Ain’t Slowin’ Down is a spirit lifter and shake & baker in times of isolation. The original peaked at #8 on the NZ Hot Singles Charts.

With the support of NZ On Air, SAM V’s Y$O crew also created an innovative, cinematic visual piece. It’s certainly a clip worth isolating a few minutes with. Following a successful 2019 where SAM V was a prominent feature on the NZ Hot Singles charts, released 2 albums & 10 music videos, and started his own creative collective called Y$O, SAM V has sped back into 2020 with another statement.

Namely a statement called - Ain’t Slowin’ Down (remix). Keep tabs on this young creative, as he inevitably has more output up his sleeve in 2020 including an EP with bKIDD, Y$O and another album.
