Flamingo Pier Drops Brand New Self Titled Album

Dropping today on June 4th, serving up euphoric disco hooks, to classic house choruses and forays into Latin funk, balearic and psychedelia, New Zealand collective Flamingo Pier deliver their debut self-titled album in June 2021.

The self-titled album draws from the band’s wide-ranging taste. Channelling classic emotive house, to disco, Afro and jazz funk on their debut album, Flamingo Pier cite a wide range of musical influences such as Khruangbin, Róisín Murphy, Peven Everett, house legends Masters at Work and Brazilian artist Tim Maia. This translates into an uplifting but nostalgic current running throughout the album - reflecting on last chances, soul-searching and longing for the carefree days of the dance floor.

The group were lucky enough in February 2021 however, to host the annual Flamingo Pier festival, on the paradisiacal Waiheke Island. While this year did not allow for international acts to perform, the vibrant local scene delivered. The power of music, with its ability to create and heighten joy amongst a crowd of people could not have been more apparent, or more needed in this time - something that this album aims to spread even further.

To celebrate their release they have announced 4 headlining shows next month:
July 2 - 121, Wellington (DJ Set)
July 3 - Flux, Christchurch (DJ Set)
July 9 - Galatos, Auckland (full band)
July 24 - HB Showgrounds, Hastings (DJ set)

The Dawns - June Showcase Profile

thumbnail_IMG_2281.jpg

As part of a special three headlined June showcase, The Dawns - Mila (Lead Vocals & Rhythm Guitar), Imogen (Backing Vocals & Bass), Georgia (Lead Guitar) and Elliott (Drums), are four Kiwi girls doing what they do best, playing music and enjoying themselves while doing it. After five years of playing and performing music together,.

The Dawns have grown out of the garage and into the eye of the world. While seeming incompatible and "too young", The Dawns have proved everyone wrong showing the world who they truly are. Not playing into the girly acoustic sound of most girls their age, The Dawns strive to break that mould with their indie alternative rock. The Dawns are a group of determined young girls who belong on the stage playing the music they love.

A promising future lies ahead of The Dawns and they will continue to form to their potential every single day, together. Catch them this Saturday at Cassette Nine.

Auckland artist Reuben Hudson released his latest single ‘Baby Bedside’ today, available on all streaming platforms. It’s a psychedelic, alternative indie-folk song, written, performed, recorded and mixed by Reuben himself with the music video (directed by Toi Rankin, filmed and edited by Peter Furlong) due to release on May 24th.

This continues Reuben’s return to music following a kidney transplant surgery in 2020, as music he’s crafted over the past few years are now ready for release. He played and recorded the whole song in his bedroom and was assisted by Jin Song who mastered the track.

From Northland, 27year old Tazman Jack released his debut album "Eyes Closed" at the end of last month. Over the years he has developed a sound that is a mix of Craig David, John Mayer and the soulful kiwi roots of Six60.

Taz wrote every song on the album, played the guitar parts, programmed the other instruments, and recorded and produced the album (with support from other Woodcut producers, including Tom Lee who mixed and mastered the album). “I wanted to be able to play my music with a full band, so my music has become more natural and organic as I’ve gone on,” explains Taz. “This album definitely reflects this style development.”

‘Real’ is the showcase single of the album, a heartfelt, fun track about love that features R&B support vocals from and has been funded by NZ on Air. Other songs on the album, including ‘Better Than Me’ and ‘Myself,’ deal with mental health which he is a strong advocate for as he has a holistic view to life and believes you need to take care of the body, mind and the spirit for your personal well being.
