Kiwi pop artist Ashley Alexander has put himself squarely on the map amongst industry heavyweights in the lead up to his debut, dropping his single “Lying” today Ashley tells all in reflecting on a time seasoned with grief and tragedy.
New Zealand has a grim reputation when it comes to mental wellbeing, its synonymous with our heritage and cultural identity as Kiwis. Paraparaumu raised artist, Ashley Alexander like many other youth of his generation recalls his time battling grief and the depression that followed. Now aged 26, and a first time father, the song comes with more meaning than ever.
“I never intended to release this track, but it is a chapter you can’t skip. This part of my life was enduring, it was difficult to lose friends in such tragic circumstances, to behave as if nothing was falling apart inside. I recently moved back to my hometown and became a father, Looking back on the song I wrote in my darkest time is humbling and forces me to remember where I came from…because amongst the dark times were moments of strength and people today need to be reminded how strong they really are”.
Accompanying the single is an intimate music video carefully taking us behind closed doors. Following the journey back home, we travel through Ashley’s life and share the highs and lows along the way. Directed by wellington local, Shyam Patel the video is part of a video series in support of the single.
